Though not in itself “small”, this canvas is undoubtedly a first draft for a very much larger painting of the same scene (about 3m square) which Marietta was still working on at the time of her death in 1963.
This larger vast canvas was given to the fledgling University of East Anglia in 1965. The rolled-up canvas was stored in some temporary storage space, and subsequently disappeared.
